#Brexit - 'Backstop la se kontra a pi byen epi sèlman posib - li pa ouvè a re-negosyasyon'
Asked about what would happen in a ‘no deal’ scenario by Irish Times correspondent Patrick Smyth (22 January), Margaritas Schinas – European Commission Chief Spokesperson – said it was pretty obvious ‘you would have a hard border’. The spokesperson’s words caused consternation in Ireland.
The following day (23 January) Schinas said that the EU was doing everything to do to avoid the need for a hard border, that the Commission has full solidarity with Ireland and that Ireland and the UK had responsibilities in respecting the Customs Union and Single Market. Schinas said that this was why the backstop was ‘the best and only possible deal and that it was not open for renegotiation’.
