Greyhound racing, much like horse racing, is a sport that can be enjoyed by many. It might not have quite the esteem of its equine counterpart, but greyhound racing is a great way of socialising with friends, family, and work colleagues, and is becoming ever more popular among young sports fans.

The UK and Ireland have always had an affinity with the sport, but the thrill of a night at the track, and viewing races from across the globe, has spread its wings across the whole of Europe in recent years.

Why Is Greyhound Racing So Popular?

With a mixture of the love of sport and the love of dogs throughout the world, greyhound racing combines the two to provide a reason to get involved for more than one reason.
Of course, another large part of the popularity is that betting on greyhound racing has joined football and horse racing as a major reason why younger fans now follow the sport. It is particularly popular amongst sports betting fans in the UK and Ireland.
Greyhound racing also gives fans that attend a track a chance to witness the incredible athleticism of the dogs, and see up close the commitment and care of their owners and trainers as they prepare their runners for action

As the name suggests, greyhound racing is where supremely athletic dogs race each other around a track to see which one has the greatest speed and stamina. A total of six to eight dogs battle each other for victory, chasing a mechanical hare over a variety of distances.
The runners are first loaded into 'traps' with the gates opening as the mechanical hare passes by. As the traps spring open, the dogs involved race to make it to the first bend in the best position, with the race then beginning in earnest as they speed down the straight.
The first dog to cross the line in front is declared the winner.

Greyhound Racing Around The World
Although the UK and Ireland are the countries in which greyhound racing is most popular, it is continuing to grow its popularity elsewhere in the world. Australia and New Zealand have established a very popular greyhound racing scene, whilst interest in the sport in the United States is also on the up.

Mexico also has a growing greyhound fanbase, whilst parts of Asia continue to use the sport as part of their huge sports and betting industry.

The Big Races
Angle Greyhound Derby
Arguably the most famous greyhound race in the world is the prestigious English Greyhound Derby. Dating back to 1927, the Derby is run at Colwick Park in Nottingham, England, and is the most coveted of all the prizes that the sport has to offer.
English Oaks
The Oaks is the equivalent of the Derby but is restricted to female dogs. Currently, run at Swindon Racetrack in the UK, it may not be as valuable as the Derby, but is just as prestigious.
Greyhound racing was once known as a niche sport enjoyed by just those involved in the industry, but it is now attracting interest from other sports fans who are beginning to realise the fun and excitement that it has to offer.
