The European People’s Party (EPP) welcomes the European Commission’s proposals for a European Labour Authority and access to social protection, led by the European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility and EPP Vice President Marianne Thyssen.
On this occasion, EPP President Joseph Daul made the following statement: “Today, we are witnessing the launch of another of the European Union’s concrete actions to improve the life of our citizens. Jobs and social security have been two of the main concerns of our citizens in the past decades. With constantly changing labour markets, new forms of work and increased mobility of workers, the EU citizens worry whether they will have a job tomorrow, whether they are entitled to social protection or if they will be treated fairly when they move to work in another member state.
"These are concerns that affect every day millions of EU citizens who move across the EU in search of a better job and a better future. That’s why I am delighted that the Juncker Commission with Commissioner Thyssen are proposing a social fairness package today that addresses our citizens’ worries.
"The prosperity and security of our union depends on our capacity to adapt to new realities. We no longer live in a world where people stay in the same job or in the same country throughout all their life.
"Digital revolution, open borders and flexible contracts bring new opportunities but also challenges. We must embrace these developments but also ensure that all EU workers and the self-employed enjoy access to social protection, adequate information and free and fair labour mobility. The Commission’s proposal is a step forward in addressing these challenges and having a well-functioning EU labour market.”
